Upcyling a Family Heirloom

In my opinion, one of the best things to have come out of the credit crunch is the passion and fashion for recycling and upcycling vintage and antique items in the home.

People now think twice before flinging out something that is not only still functions perfectly well, but that also has a lot more character and meaning to it than the equivalent bought new. There's also the ability to make your own mark on items passed down over generations, like this lovely pine dresser that has been in my family for over 30 years.

P and I loved it, but weren't convinced by the colour of the wood in our kitchen, so I set to painting it white with a very shabby chic finish and we are thrilled with the results. Painting is really simple to do, especially if you have the right tools. I love Annie Sloane's chalk paints, which you can literally slap on with no preparation to the wood at all - amazing! I also made sure I invested in some really good brushes and these gel ones from Harris really made the job a really smooth one.

What have you got around the house that you could breathe some life back into with a new look?
