Home Events: Kate's Great Gatsby Garden Party
To launch my new Home Events section on Little Miss Homes, I couldn’t think of a better party to start with than Kate Moss’s fabulous home-based wedding in Gloucestershire. Thank you to the incredible Mario Testino and American Vogue for these stunning images and details of what was an extremely tasteful and quintessentially British event. Home events are wonderful as they allow such scope for uniqueness as well as personal and homemade touches.
Kate wanted a 1920s style event and employed the services of friend and top events producer Sam Gainsbury to help create her vision. “I wanted it to be kind of dreamy and 1920s, when everything is soft-focus,” says Kate. “The Great Gatsby. The code name was GG for a while. That light and that kind of fun decadence. It’s rock-’n’-roll Great Gatsby!”
There were Edwardian marquees in her field and a circus tent for the children, with a miniature drum kit and their own DJ and tepees for them to sleep in.
On a perfect English day in an idyllic local church filled with pale, feathery greenery and white flowers: delphiniums, daisies, scabious, and sweet-scented stock, Kate married her long-term partner Jamie Hince. The effect was enchanting: a scene out of Thomas Hardy.
After the ceremony the guests and the bridal party headed to Kate’s gardens, which were decorated with votive candles hanging from fruit trees in their jam jars, antique lanterns and an artfully arranged pyramid of champagne flutes. Paper cones filled with rose petals for the bridal couple were arranged on little café tables, and antique wicker chairs peppering the lawn. The Second Looks Tent, for guests to change in after the ceremony, was appointed like a Hollywood boudoir with faceted mirror screens, thirties standard lamps, and dressing tables heaving with pink and beige roses.
The dining pavilion was lit by Victorian chandeliers, and 1920s silver ashtrays decorated on the tabletops among pale apricot and lilac roses, while Chesterfield sofas and Edwardian palms flanked the dance floor—a setting fit for a modern-day Daisy Buchanan!
